Licensed PsychologistRecovery from an eating disorder is not linear. Meaning there can be lapses or “slides” back into eating disordered thinking and behaviors. We as caregivers must recognize that these lapses do not equal failure on the part of our loved one our ourselves as parents/caregivers. Although easy to be disheartened when these lapses occur – it is more productive to try and understand what precipitated or played a role in the lapse so that we can, together with our loved one, try to build resiliency and knowledge of triggers so that we will be better placed to address them in future.

- A Guide for Discussing Your Concerns With Your Primary Care Provider
When you’re worried that your child has an eating disorder, figuring out how to get help for them can be very overwhelming. Primary care providers (family doctors, pediatricians, and nurse practitioners) play an important role in addressing eating disorder concerns, which can span diagnosing, referring to specialized eating disorder programs, and providing regular medical supervision. It’s recommended that you arrange for your child to be assessed by their primary care provider as one of the first steps in getting help.As it’s often difficult for people with an eating disorder to admit to or be open about their difficulties, consider speaking with your child’s primary care provider privately before they see your child. You may find this discussion guide useful to have on hand when you visit their primary care provider.

- Addressing Issues of Autonomy and Beneficence in the Treatment of Eating Disorders
A NEDIC Bulletin discussing autonomy and beneficence in an eating disorder context. In general terms, the principle of autonomy recognizes that an individual who is competent has the right to make an informed choice about medical treatment. This choice must be made without coercion or undue influences from others. The principle of beneficence requires that health care providers do that which is considered “good”, or in the best interests of the person for whom they are providing care.

https://higherlogicdownload.s3.amazonaws.com/AEDWEB/27a3b69a-8aae-45b2-a04c-2a078d02145d/UploadedImages/Publications_Slider/FINAL_AED_Psycholohgical_book.pdf“A Guide to Selecting Evidence-based Psychological Therapies for Eating Disorders”, by Laura Collins Lyster-Mensh, outlines first and second line treatments for both children/adolescents and adults, and is broken down by eating disorder diagnosis. Laura, served as co-chair of the AED Psychological Care Guidelines Task Force, the group that researched and wrote the Guidelines. In addition, it links to treatment guidelines in a multitude of countries and offers additional references containing the evidence upon which the guide was based.
This guide can help families identify which psychological treatments for eating disorders are proven to be effective based on evidence. If these treatments are not offered to them, they can advocate in favor of evidence-based treatment for their family member. In addition, this guide can be an advocacy tool used to lobby governments, health services, and insurance companies.
The recommendations contained in this publication are globally applicable, with the expectation that these evidence-based treatments should be available in every country. This is the first such guideline of its kind and represents a historic advance in the eating disorders field.
